We have followed the progress of the children of Israel as God delivered them from Egypt and has been leading them toward the Promised Land. Today we come to a place where the Israelites have turned from God and begun to worship an idol. God tells Moses that He will no longer go with them on their journey into the Promised Land but will lead them through an angel. Moses and the Israelites know they can’t go on without the Lord’s presence, and Moses intercedes on behalf of the people, telling God that without His presence, he does not want to go forward.
